Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain illness characterized by pain and stiffness, tenderness, fatigue, depression, and difficulty sleeping. Pain in the neck, back, and shoulders are common in fibromyalgia patients, but any body part can be involved. These patients usually experience a wide range of symptoms that can change over time. Unfortunately this means that fibromylagia patients are often misdiagnosed, and sometimes do not have their pain taken seriously by doctors.
If you are a fibromyalgia patient, you probably know this all too well.
Modern medicine does not understand the underlying cause of fibromyalgia. It is typically treated with a variety of drugs that relieve symptoms. For example: sleeping pills for insomnia, analgesics for pain relief, etc.
In contrast, fibromyalgia is quite well understood by Chinese medicine, and often responds very well to treatment. According to the Chinese medicine view, the diffuse pain of fibromyalgia is caused by disturbances in the flow of qi (vital energy) and blood, particularly in energy channels corresponding to the Liver. It sounds a little strange to someone who isn't familiar with Chinese medicine, but the results are very real. Correcting these imbalances can produce dramatic improvements in a fibromyalgia patient's life.
Treatment of fibromyalgia with acupuncture and herbal medicine typically results in reduction in the intensity and frequency of pain, improvements in sleep quality, and usually produce a calming effect on the patient. As with all chronic illness, recovery is slow and steady, but progress will be made with each visit. Within a short number of visits, most of our fibromyalgia patients reported dramatic improvements - and a tremendous feeling of relief that comes with knowing there is hope for recovery.
