Safe alternatives to dangerous arthritis drugs

Arthritis Treatment

Alternative and complementary medicine therapies can be of great help to arthritis sufferers. These therapies are much safer than modern medical treatments like drugs and surgery, and they are very effective in relieving symptoms of arthritis.

Dangerous Pills

Recent safety concerns have led to the withdrawal of several arthritis drugs from the market, including:
  • Bextra: The FDA has asked the manufacturer to withdraw Bextra from the market because of dangers including: the increased risk of cardiovascular problems and reports of potentially life-threatening skin reactions, including deaths, in patients using Bextra.

  • Celebrex: The FDA has asked the manufacturer to include a warning in the Celebrex label warning patients of an increased risk of heart problems and potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding.

  • Vioxx: Withdrawn from the market by Merck in 2004 due to safety concerns. Vioxx may have caused an estimated 27,785 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths between 1999 and 2003, according to the FDA.
In addition, the FDA has issued new warnings for over a dozen popular drugs for pain, including Aleve, Motrin, and Advil.

Safe Alternatives

Massage: Massage therapy is one of the most ancient forms of medical care. It can be a great way to ease the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis, and many doctors recommend massage to their patients with arthritis.

Acupuncture and Acupressure: Acupuncture and acupressure are ancient Chinese medical treatments that have gained great popularity in America. In acupuncture, needles are used to stimulate specific points throughout the body. Pain relief is often quick and dramatic. Over several treatments, acupuncture can have lasting results in decreasing the intensity and frequency of arthritis pain.

Diet: Everything you eat affects your health! For arthritis sufferers, it is extremely important to be aware of how diet affects your symptoms. A consultation with one of our practitioners can help you better understand this relationship between food and symptoms.

Herbs and Supplements: Herbs, supplements and other natural remedies have provided great relief for people with arthritis who are frustrated with the solutions offered by conventional medicine.

Visit a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, or doctor of naturopathic medicine to get the right recommendations for you. Herbs are a safe alternative to drug therapy - but only if properly prescribed for your particular symptoms and body type. Buy your herbs from a trusted source, after getting sound advice from someone trained in herbal medicine.
